Butterfly Count

June 25, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

BUTTERFLY COUNT Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary NABA Count Saturday, June 25 – (Rain Date Sunday, June 26) 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Meet at Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary, 407 N. LaFrenz Rd, Liberty, MO www.naturesanctuary.com.

A small fee of $3 per participant helps NABA with program costs. Join us as we count butterflies for the annual North American Butterfly Association butterfly count! This is the 17th year for the MLTNS count. We’ll start at Martha Lafite at 9:00 a.m., then continue on to Cooley Lake Conservation Area and Watkins Mill State Park and other areas in the 15-mile diameter count circle as time permits. We’ll pick up lunch at Sorella’s in Liberty before we go to Cooley Lake. OR, bring a sack lunch if you prefer.

These fun counts held throughout North America contribute to a growing knowledge of butterfly distributions, flight times, and abundance. No experience necessary – all are welcome to help spot butterflies and learn butterfly identification! We will be staying outside and keeping social distancing since cases are on the rise again. Bring along a mask in case there will be closer contact. Bring snacks, plenty of fluids to drink, bug spray, sunscreen, lunch money and $3; binoculars and camera optional. Unfortunately, we are sometimes known for picking the hottest day of the year so cross your fingers. Wear long pants in case the levees haven’t been mowed at Cooley and it’s a good idea to wear them anyway for tick protection. Stay for part of the day or all day.
